Pantone Colour of 2021: Where Does it Fit in My Home Renovation?

What Colour is 2021?

Gray and Yellow, my Friends. But, not just any Gray and Yellow, Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow. These are the colours that will see be popping up in our favorite stores, our closets, digital designs, advertisements, and our homes.
Why, you ask? Because these are the Pantone Colours of 2021!

I have always loved the release of the Pantone Colour of the Year, and I know I’m not the only one! For me, the release of the colours signals a new beginning and shows just how much planning and research goes into it by the Pantone Colour Institute and their belief in the impact these colours will have on us in the coming year.

So, whether or not I fall in love with the colour of the year, I always love reading about it and then watching over the next year how it influences the beauty of design throughout our world.

For those of you that might not be familiar, the Pantone Colour of the Year has influenced product development and purchasing decision in multiple industries including: fashion, home furnishings, graphic design and industrial design.

Here is a quote from the Pantone Colour Institute executive director that outlines the unique emotional effect felt by the combination of these two colours:

“The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”

Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute

How Does This Fit in With my Home Renovation?

You will soon begin to see these colours influence home furniture options, paint colour advertisements, commercials and so much more! If you are considering a significant change in your home; furniture purchases, painting your walls, trim, or kitchen cabinets, it is important to think about longevity. Every year, the colour of the year will change, but the design of your home should last you 10-20 years.

So, now that you are seeing the colour of the year everywhere, do you love it?

Here are some of my design ideas on how to implement this vibrant combination of colours in your home, wardrobe, office space, or any other area of your life where colour plays a prominent role!

How Do I Put it All Together?

So, you love the colours of the year and want to implement them in your home. Great!

Here are a few ways I recommend putting these exciting steps into place:

Take some time to assess the colours in your home: the dominant wood colours, furniture accents, fabrics on blankets or curtains, even kitchen appliances.
From here, create an exciting colour pallet for your home.

My rule of thumb is, your home should have approximately 2-3 neutral tones (shades of white, gray, brown or black) and one or two ‘pop’ colours (more bold colour choices that will literally pop out against the more dominant neutral shades).

I am a huge believer in the power of colour to affect the energy of your space (surprise surprise!) So, I will always go with 2 pop colours. This gives me more to flexibility if I wish to make small changes in my space. If you can substitute one of your neutrals for the 2021 Ultimate Gray, and one of your pop colours for the Illuminating Yellow, then the change will certainly suit your home!

Even if it is just one of the two 2021 colours, I say give it shot!

The 2020 colour was Classic Blue and we saw it both on the interior and exterior of Calgary’s homes in many of the creative ways I mentioned above!

We hope to see these two exciting Pantone Colours of the Year - Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow, in many of the homes we visit this spring and summer to help with the painting side of your homes colour transformation!
