What Colour is this? A Guide on Painting Your Home and What Colour to Choose

Colours can be a bit overwhelming when you are looking to paint the walls of your home. Trust me, you are not alone. It is natural to be concerned about that tiny colour swatch on your 30 x 10 ft wall looking blue, or pink, or just going horribly wrong. Eliminating the “or” from your colour selection is important in creating confidence with your choices and trusting you will end up with a space you love!

Where to Start?

Like the infamous Marie Kondo, you should always start with a few options that Spark Joy! Even if it yellow or blue, there are many ways to incorporate colour into your space, so you might as well really love them. Once you have narrowed it down to a few options, you should start looking at the surroundings of the walls. Start by asking yourself the following questions:

  1. What is the dominant colour in my flooring?

  2. Will this colour compliant or distract from my furniture and interior designs?

  3. Are there any colours in my space currently that would pull a colour out in this sample I don’t like?

What is the dominant colour in my flooring?

Once you paint a surface area, the colour can be manipulated by the colours surrounding it. Meaning, a red-brown floor might pull out the red in paint. So, if you don’t want red walls, you will want to stay away from colours that have a base red or pink tone. Keep reading to determine the base colour in your paint!

Will this colour compliment my space, or distract me from it?

It’s best to determine if you are the type of person that loves colour in your furniture or loves neutral tones in your furniture. Me, I love a bright yellow chair or a blue couch. So I usually like my walls to be neutral so I can play with my furniture colours more. If you like more neutral furniture, I would recommend a pop colour on your walls to liven up your space!

Determining the Base Colour in Paint

It is easier to determine the base in a darker paint colour. The lighter ones can be a bit tricky!

If you are looking for something lighter, take into consideration the darkest colour on a fan swatch. If you don’t like the darkest, or it’s a colour you are trying to avoid, don’t use that light colour. The base colour in the paint will be very noticeable in the darker representation. For example, if the dark colour is hot pink, the white will have a pink undertone. If the darkest colour is a deep blue, the light gray will have a blue undertone.
